Help People in Need With Project Headway LLC: A Low-Cost Hair Salon Run by Veteran, Single Mother of Three Charlee Murdock

During the pandemic, Charlee Murdock, a veteran and single mother of three from the Hazleton Area of Pennsylvania, combined her experience in beauty to create her startup: Project Headway LLC. This salon located in Weatherly, PA, especially caters to those in need by supplying low-cost haircuts. Her life experiences motivated her to step in and help people who struggle with even less than she has.

“I thought of people who had even less than me and wanted to help them,” Murdock mentioned. “I think everyone should have nice hair.”

Project Headway’s Vision: Salon-Grade Products to Support Philanthropic Causes

Murdock’s mission to make people feel good with amazing haircuts is only part of the story. She also hopes to produce salon-grade products with the profits created from her enterprise in order to support her philanthropic vision.

“Our first product is a foil cutting machine,” Murdock explained. “We’re working with Bucknell University and Penn State to get that built.”

The Hazleton LaunchBox: Nurturing Entrepreneurship and Helping Charlee’s Vision Become Reality

When Murdock first introduced her concept, she was directed to William Andahazy, the entrepreneurship education coordinator at Hazleton LaunchBox supported by Pasco L. Schiavo, Esq. The LaunchBox has been an immense factor in Murdock’s entrepreneurial success.

“When Murdock first met Andahazy, her idea was to provide free coloring services so people can go to job interviews,” Murderock recalled. “William said, ‘Well that’s great, but how are you going to pay for it?’ And that’s how the salon came to be.”

Murdock is taking strides to get her venture capitalized with the assistance of the Hazleton LaunchBox.

“We’re hoping to get into the tecBRIDGE Business Plan Competition next year, but for now we’re looking for investors and grant money,” said Murdock.

Reap the Benefits of Hazleton LaunchBox

Project Headway has brought Murdock more than just business and financial opportunities. It has boosted her confidence in her abilities to create and thrive.

Murdock advises people who have vision to get in touch with the Hazleton LaunchBox for guidance and support.

“[The LaunchBox] is such an asset to [small businesses],” Murdock sang its praises. “I would advise people to surround themselves with mentors and a network with business-savvy people that can help you.”
